The Lens Tables (L1–L25)

Twenty-five tables in five families. Pick by judgement — the table that matches the pressured moment. Each result gives four parts: the Tell, the Impression, the Impulse, and the Tag. Follow the Impulse or Resist it (+1 untagged Beat), then mark the Pressure Clock. See Chapter 7 for reading results and the Reference Layer for the loop at speed.

L1 · Suspicion (Reading the Situation)

A binary question from inside the character — they hold a suspicion, a hunch, a gut-leaning, and L1 reads how it lands. The result is the character’s perception, not necessarily the truth.

I hold a suspicion: [the suspicion]. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

1CLEARLY NOTNothing here. The thing I noticed isn’t what I thought it was: a mark, an accident, a habit of suspecting.I’ll let it go. It’s clean.Clue +1
2NO, BUT INFORMATIVEI’m wrong about this. But the thing I noticed is real — it’s pointing somewhere I haven’t looked.I’ll trace it. My instinct was right, just aimed at the wrong thing.Clue +1
3NO, AND NOTICEDNot true. But the act of looking gave me away. Someone or something caught me looking.I’ll break contact. I’ll act as if I never saw.Exposure +1
4RULE CONFIRMEDThis isn’t mine to look at. Someone with more authority decides what gets checked here.I’ll look away and move past. It’s not my call to make.Control +1
5NEED A BETTER LOOKI can’t tell. Not enough to read.I’ll get in closer and put hands on it before the moment’s gone.Pressure +1
6YES, BUT SMALLTrue. Just not worth the noise.I’ll bury it where I can find it again, and not be the one who brings it up.Cost +1
7YES, AND IT’LL COSTTrue. And the truth carries a price.I’ll set the price before I pay it.Cost +1
8I GOT CHECKED BACKTrue. And the looking ran both ways. Something is reading me now.I’ll change my posture. I’ll stop feeding it.Exposure +2
9YES, BUT WRONG PLACEYes — but I’m looking at the wrong thing. It’s somewhere I’m not watching.I’ll turn my back on the obvious thing and put my hands on what I was ignoring.Clue +2
10YES, AND FINALTrue. And there’s no one left to argue with. The decision was made before I arrived.I’ll stop fighting it and work out who decided this before I arrived — and what it cost them.Control +2
11YES, AND IT’S WRONGTrue. And it’s wrong in a way I can feel in my teeth. Nothing this wrong was made by accident.I’ll find one solid thing. I won’t let go of it.Uncanny +2
12RIGHT, AND TOO LATEThe suspicion is true — and older than my noticing. Whatever I sensed has been at work since before I thought to ask, and the asking changes nothing it has already done.I’ll stop testing whether it’s real and start counting what it has already cost.Uncanny +2

RollSenseDescription
1SurfaceA mark, texture, wear, or physical trace carries the answer.
2BehaviourSomeone’s reaction, movement, or shift carries the read.
3SoundWhat carries, echoes, stops, or starts.
4Smell / TasteA scent, taste, or warmth — something only nearness reveals.
5TimingSomething happens too early, too late, or exactly on cue.
6AbsenceWhat should be here is not, or what should not be here is.
Worked example
Suspicion: The courier is being followed. Fact: I hold a suspicion that the courier crossing the square has a tail. Plainly, a young woman in a brown coat moves through the market stalls, unhurried, stopping at a vegetable stand. Two men in grey stand near the fountain, looking at nothing in particular. Roll 3 — NO, AND NOTICED · First Sign 5, Timing · [Exposure +1] NO, AND NOTICED — the suspicion is wrong (no tail), but the noticing turns on me. The First Sign (Timing) is how: I hold on the two grey men a beat too long, and the look gives me away. Lens statement: I watch the courier cross the square — unhurried, ordinary, clean. I hold on the grey men a beat too long, and something catches me looking. So I break contact and act as if I never saw. [Exposure +1] That is enough. I don’t need to know who the men are. The courier is clean — I may not be.

L2 · Crossing a Threshold (Reading the Situation)

Arriving or reaching a new location — a place, area, zone, plane, realm, world, or pocket dimension. L2 fires on arrival, the moment the character is in it.

I am at [place or realisation]. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

RollSenseDescription
1ShapeSomething here has the wrong outline, angle, or silhouette. An idea has the wrong outline. It almost fits, but not quite.
2PlacementSomething sits where it shouldn’t — or is missing from where it should. One thought sits where another should be. Something is missing from the argument.
3MovementSomething here is moving wrong — too fast, too slow, repeating, or unnaturally still. The thought moves wrongly: too quickly, too slowly, looping, freezing, or running on its own.
4SurfaceSomething on a surface here is wrong — a wear, mark, or trace that shouldn't be, or should be and isn't. A detail carries a mark: an emphasis, a contradiction, a repeat.
5SoundSomething doesn't sound right — too quiet, too loud, mistimed, carrying, or rehearsed. Something about the thought's voice is wrong: a phrase echoes, a memory sounds rehearsed, a silence becomes meaningful.
6AbsenceWhat hits you first is what isn’t here — something that should be present but isn’t. What matters is the missing thought, missing explanation, missing objection, or missing fear.

L3 · Read the Situation (Reading the Situation)

Pausing to assess — the character is in a situation (arrived, held, woken, or mid-motion) and stops to read it deliberately. Not a first impression — looking properly.

I pause in [situation] and read it. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

L4 · Disposition (Reading the Situation)

How a person, group, or force feels toward the character — the temperature of the relationship, the shape of their intent. Reads a collective (an audience, a council, a jury, a crowd) as a single gut, not as individuals.

I read [person, group, or force]. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

RollSenseDescription
1ExpressionWhat the face or eyes show first.
2VoiceTone, pace, volume, or the quality of how they speak.
3SpaceHow they hold distance, yield ground, or close it.
4GestureWhat the hands, posture, or bearing carry.
5TimingWhen they speak, pause, or move relative to expectation.
6SilenceWhat they do not say, do not offer, or hold back.
Worked example
Fact: I read the harbour master at the dock gate. Plainly, he is middle-aged, heavyset, behind a ledger, three ahead of me in the queue. Roll 9 — PRACTISED WARMTH · First Sign 4, Gesture · [Threat +2] PRACTISED WARMTH over a clerk isn’t an obvious threat — so I read it through the First Sign: his hands open the same practised way for everyone, perfectly timed. Warmth ahead of its reason; the Threat is the gap. Lens statement: I read the harbour master — his hands open the same practised way for each person, warm and perfectly timed. So I feed the performance a real question it can’t charm its way around. [Threat +2] That is enough. I don’t need to know what he wants or whether he’s corrupt — the read changed how I see him, gave it a surface in his hands, and put threat on the clock.

L5 · Make the Move (Engaging People)

A deliberate move into engagement — opening contact, raising the stakes, naming the unspoken, the question or line meant to land. L5 reads how the move lands and what the gut says to do next. For moves that matter, not casual exchanges.

I approach / address / confront [person, group, or force]. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

L6 · Terms and Leverage (Engaging People)

Bargaining as the live situation — terms, prices, leverage, threats, favours on the table. L6 reads the negotiation itself, not a single move within it; for that, see L5: Make the Move.

Roll 6 — STALLING · First Sign 4, Pause · [Pressure +1] STALLING — the First Sign (Pause) shows it: he runs a finger down the page, then stops and says nothing. L7 · Masks and Status (Engaging People)

Social reality as the battlefield — reputation, hierarchy, etiquette, face, scandal, dominance. The character navigates a space where position, protocol, and perception carry real weight, and the social frame itself is what’s being tested.

I enter / speak / act within [social situation]. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

5TimingWhen the word, gesture, or silence lands in the exchange.
6AbsenceWhat courtesy is withheld, what title is not used, what gesture is not made.
Worked example
Fact: I enter the banquet hall for the governor’s reception. Plainly, forty guests stand in clusters between long tables, and a steward waits at the door with a list. Roll 4 — SLIGHT DELIVERED · First Sign 6, Absence · [Reputation +1] SLIGHT DELIVERED — the First Sign (Absence) is what’s missing: the steward doesn’t use my title. A cut dressed as courtesy, and everyone close enough heard it. Lens statement: The steward greets me — without my title, precisely, where the room can hear. So I answer the cut. I name what just happened, in front of the same witnesses. [Reputation +1] That is enough. I don’t need to know whether the slight was ordered from above or just a clerk’s mistake — only that the social ground shifted under me.

L8 · Under Watch (Engaging People)

Attention tightens — surveillance, suspicion, tests, interrogation, being tracked or judged; the character is no longer just observed, they’re the subject. L8 fires when watching becomes present pressure — a watcher who can question, confront, or act — not the ambient surveillance of the world the character already moves through.

I am checked / followed / questioned / observed at [situation]. Plainly, [objective detail].

6AbsenceWhat is not checked, not asked, or does not follow.

Roll 3 — INTEREST SHARPENS · First Sign 5, Timing · [Exposure +1] INTEREST SHARPENS — the First Sign (Timing) shows it: the nearer clerk glances up a second time before looking back at the screen. Something caught their eye. Lens statement: The nearer clerk’s eyes come up a second time, a beat too long, then drop back to the screen. So I give them something else to look at. [Exposure +1] That is enough. I don’t need to know what the clerk noticed, or whether the second glance was routine — only that the scrutiny just tightened.

L9 · Performance and Spectacle (Engaging People)

Performing as the primary action — song, oratory, ritual display, entertainment, a performed role under scrutiny (cover, false identity, undercover, witness statement). 4RhythmHow the pace, flow, or timing shifts.
5SpaceHow the room feels — larger, smaller, closer, farther.
6AbsenceWhat drops away — sound, attention, self-awareness, the edge of the stage.
Worked example
Fact: I stand before the hall and begin the lay of Beren and Lúthien. Plainly, thirty companions sit at table, cups lowered, firelight on their faces. Roll 10 — TRANSCENDENT MOMENT · First Sign 6, Absence · [Pressure +2] TRANSCENDENT MOMENT — the First Sign (Absence) is the tell: the sound of the fire drops away. The art is becoming more than skill. Lens statement: I’m into the lay and the fire’s crackle falls out of hearing — everything aligning, the peak arriving on its own. So I surrender to it. I don’t try to control it. [Pressure +2] That is enough. I don’t need to know whether the moment is merely masterful or genuinely numinous — only that the performance crossed a line.

L10 · Hidden Knowledge (Finding Things Out)

Examining material that might hold hidden information — documents, records, ledgers, archives, evidence, encoded artefacts, forensic scenes, where the truth lives in the content rather than the placement.

I examine / study / decode / research [document, scene, artefact, or material]. Plainly, [objective detail].

Roll d10 for a grounded read; d12 when the moment can admit the uncanny (opens 11–12 for that roll).

RollTellImpressionImpulseTag
1SURFACE READS TRUEThe material reads exactly as it appears. Plain meaning, no hidden weight, no pulled threads.I’ll take it at face value. I’ll move on.Clue +1
2STRAIGHTFORWARDEach piece fits with the others. The picture is consistent.I’ll trust the consistency. I won’t manufacture mystery.Pressure +1
3TIRED EYESAttention won’t focus. Whatever might be here, it’s not surfacing now.I’ll set it down before tired eyes start inventing patterns.Cost +1
4ALREADY LEARNEDWhatever this contains, I know it already. The material confirms what I knew.I’ll act on what I already know and not mine it again.Pressure +1
5SOMETHING REPEATSA detail surfaces twice. A name, a pattern, a turn of phrase. The repetition is the flag.I’ll trace the repetition. I won’t read past it.Clue +1
6GAP IN THE PICTURESomething should be here that isn’t. The shape of the absence is itself information.I’ll map the absence — what was removed, or never said.Clue +1
7WRONG REGISTERThe voice, the formality, the craft of this material doesn’t match what it claims to be.I’ll read it as if it’s something else. I’ll check what changes.Threat +1
8ATTENTION CAUGHTMy eye keeps returning to one place in the material. I don’t know why.I’ll read that part directly, slowly, until the catch resolves.Clue +1
9FAMILIAR HANDI’ve encountered this before. Same maker, same training, same source. The material is connected to something I know.I’ll name the connection.Reputation +2
10DEEPER LAYERThe surface gives way. There’s something underneath this — a level of meaning the casual read won’t reach.I’ll settle in. The shallow read isn’t the read.Pressure +2
11KNOWLEDGE STIRSWhat I’m reading is changing how I understand other things I know. Connections firing without my asking.I’ll pin the new shape down before it rewrites what I knew.Uncanny +2
12LIGHT MOVESThe material is reading me back. As I study it, something studies me. Not safe attention.I’ll set it down with respect. I won’t look away first, and I won’t keep staring.Uncanny +2

First Sign — d6

RollSenseDescription
1RepetitionA detail that surfaces twice. A name, a phrase, a number, a pattern.
2OmissionWhat should be here that isn’t. The gap in expected content.
3RegisterVoice, tone, formality, or craft of the material — and where it slips.
4HandThe maker’s signature, training, or style behind the work.
5LayerA second meaning surfacing under the first.
6SilenceWhere the material goes quiet — the record that ends, the trail gone cold, the answer it won’t give.
Worked example
Fact: I sit at the safe house desk with the courier’s pouch open in front of me. Plainly, three letters in different hands, a single photograph of a street corner at dusk, a folded train timetable. Roll 5 — SOMETHING REPEATS · First Sign 1, Repetition · [Clue +1] SOMETHING REPEATS — the First Sign (Repetition) is the word itself: “the kestrel” turns up in the first letter, mid-paragraph, and again in the third — different hand, different ink, both times in casual passing. The recurrence is the flag. Lens statement: The same word — “the kestrel” — sits buried in two different letters, two different hands. So I trace the repetition. I don’t read past it. [Clue +1] That is enough. I don’t yet know what “the kestrel” is — coincidence, code, or a name — that’s my system’s Investigation or Cryptography check. The result is that my attention flagged a recurrence.

1CLEAN APPROACHHands and instincts return nothing. The space reads as built.I’ll move through. I won’t waste motion.Clue +1
2EXPECTED RESISTANCEDoors stick because they’re old. Locks stiff with age. Floors creak because floors creak. Each thing reads honestly.I’ll treat resistance as honest. I’ll commit forward.Pressure +1
3WARINESS WITHOUT TARGETSomething is wrong but the hands can’t find it. Tension that won’t land.I’ll move slowly. I won’t force the find.Pressure +1
4PASSED OVERWhatever might be here, I don’t see it. Senses normal, hands free, no flag.I won’t double back. Forward is forward.Pressure +1
5HANDS REFUSEBody pulls back before mind catches up. Hands won’t commit further. Whatever the explanation, the gut has voted.I’ll stop. I’ll listen to the body before I reason against it.Threat +1
6PATTERN FAMILIARThe shape of the situation matches the shape of rigged things I’ve known. Same architecture, same warnings.I’ll treat it as if it is.Clue +1
7SOMETHING TUNEDWhatever’s here was placed by someone who thought about hands like mine. Built to beat a careful approach.I’ll slow down. The thing is built for haste.Threat +2
8WAKING SOMETHINGMy poking has stirred whatever’s here. Touching it again is what sets it off.I’ll step back. I’ll stop feeding it.Exposure +2
9WRONG ANGLEThe thing isn’t where my hands went. It’s adjacent — somewhere I didn’t touch.I’ll probe the place my fingers haven’t been.Clue +2
10MULTIPLE SHAPESOne thing felt. Two more underneath. Not a single mechanism — several.I’ll handle each layer separately. I won’t conflate them.Pressure +2
11WARDEDSomething assesses my approach. Not mechanical — attentive. The protection knows I’m here.I’ll address it directly. It expects acknowledgement.Uncanny +2
12INVITATION FELTThe thing isn’t designed to harm. It’s designed to call. Touching it would complete something.I’ll keep my hands off it, however hard it pulls.Uncanny +2

RollSenseDescription
1PressureWhat pushes back, sticks, gives, or won’t move.
2SoundA click, a hollow note, tension, or silence where sound should be.
3WeightSomething too heavy, too light, or balanced wrong.
4DraughtAir moving where it should not, or still where it should not be.
5TemperatureHeat, cold, or warmth where surface or material doesn’t justify it.
6AbsenceA safeguard that should be here and isn’t — the click that never comes, the give where there should be resistance.
Worked example
Fact: I crouch at the heavy oak chest in the centre of the chamber. Plainly, iron banding, brass lock, hinges seated firmly, no visible keyhole damage. Roll 5 — HANDS REFUSE · First Sign 1, Pressure · [Threat +1] HANDS REFUSE — the First Sign (Pressure) is in the hand itself: my fingers stop short of the lock-plate, pulled back before I decided, the metal too cold under my palm. The gut has voted. Lens statement: My hand goes for the lock and stops short — fingers pulled back before the thought lands, the air thick around the plate. So I don’t touch it. I listen to the body before I reason against it, and back off to arm’s length. [Threat +1] That is enough. I don’t yet know whether the chest is trapped, warded, or empty — that’s my system’s Find Traps check. The result is that my body refused, and whether I follow that or reach anyway.

4GeometryThe space’s proportions, distances, or angles reading wrong.
5TextureA surface, seam, or join that doesn’t match its surroundings.
6AbsenceWhat should fill this space and isn’t — no sign of the life that belongs here, a stillness where there should be movement.
Worked example
Fact: I enter the study. Plainly, four walls of bookshelves floor to ceiling, an oak desk with a green-shaded reading lamp, two leather armchairs, a fire burned out hours ago in the grate. Roll 5 — OUT OF PLACE · First Sign 5, Texture · [Clue +1] OUT OF PLACE — the First Sign (Texture) points to it: one book on the third shelf has a spine a half-shade lighter, the join less worn at the head. My eye keeps going back. Lens statement: My eye snags on one spine on the third shelf — newer leather, less wear at the head than its neighbours. So I step closer and look at it directly. I examine the breaking detail. [Clue +1] That is enough. I don’t yet know whether the book matters or is just recently rebound — that’s my system’s search check. The result is that one thing broke the pattern, and now I’m on it.

Roll 5 — COVER STRAIN · First Sign 5, Witness · [Pressure +1] COVER STRAIN — the First Sign (Witness) is the cleaner at the far end: she pauses with her mop and watches my lanyard. Roll 6 — CORNERED · First Sign 3, Space · [Threat +2] CORNERED — the First Sign (Space) is the bridge itself: too narrow to pass, the drop thirty feet to black water. Nowhere left, retreat gone. Lens statement: The bridge is too narrow to slip past him, and the black water’s thirty feet down. No way back, no way through. So I take one with me. [Threat +2] That is enough. Roll 3 — SOMETHING TRUE BLEEDING · First Sign 2, Habit · [Exposure +1] SOMETHING TRUE BLEEDING — the First Sign (Habit) is the body’s own slip: my right hand starts to my forehead in the wrong faith’s gesture before I catch it. The real self showing through. Lens statement: My hand lifts toward my forehead — the wrong prayer, the wrong faith — and I catch it half-made. So I recover without drawing attention to the recovery. 4SoundWhat carries, repeats, changes, or stops.
5ChangeSomething in the scene that is different from when the wait began.
6AbsenceWhat has not arrived, not appeared, or not happened.
Worked example
Fact: I lie in the long grass above the road, watching the ford. Plainly, the river runs shallow over flat stones and the far bank is open meadow. Roll 6 — DURATION EXTENDING · First Sign 6, Absence · [Cost +1] DURATION EXTENDING — the First Sign (Absence) is what hasn’t come: an hour past the expected time and nothing has moved on the road. The plan’s timeline is wrong. Lens statement: An hour past the mark and the road’s still empty — the timeline I planned around is already broken. So I recalculate. I stay anyway. [Cost +1] That is enough. I don’t need to know whether the contact’s been delayed or won’t come — only that the timeline has failed.

Roll 6 — EXPOSURE INCREASING · First Sign 2, Air · [Cost +1] EXPOSURE INCREASING — the First Sign (Air) carries it: a wet cold in the wind that wasn’t there an hour ago. L22 · Escalation and Fallout (Forces and Consequences)

Things intensify or dust settles — consequences land, debts form, heat rises, factions react, scars remain. The character is living with what happened. Solo play makes consequences difficult. In group play, the GM decides what the world does in response. Solo, the player has to adjudicate their own consequences, and the temptation is to minimise or maximise. L22 takes the adjudication out of the player’s hands. The dice determine the shape. The player didn’t choose it — and can’t optimise it away because the clock is ticking.

L23 · Journeys and Travel (Forces and Consequences)

Moving between locations — road complications, journey beats, what emerges during passage. The journey itself is the situation. Solo play makes travel easy to skip. In group play, the GM fills the road with incident; solo, the player narrates their own passage, and the temptation is to wave the miles away or pre-decide the one obstacle that suits the plan. L23 takes the road out of the player’s hands. The dice decide what the journey produces. The player didn’t choose it — and can’t shortcut it, because the clock travels with them.

Roll 7 — NAVIGATION DOUBT · First Sign 6, Absence · [Clue +2] NAVIGATION DOUBT — the First Sign (Absence) is the marker that isn’t there: the waystone that should stand at the ford is missing. L24 · Rest and Recovery (Forces and Consequences)

Downtime, camp, healing, or preparation between action. The character has stopped moving. The question is what the stillness reveals. Most RPGs have a rest mechanic — it tells you what you recover, not the quality of the rest or what the inactivity did to the person resting. L24 fills that gap: a night’s camp in hostile territory, a month’s recovery in a safe house, or a five-year hiatus between campaigns.

Roll 4 — REFLECTION HEAVY · First Sign 3, Thought · [Clue +1] REFLECTION HEAVY — the First Sign (Thought) is what the stillness brings up: the face of the man at the ford, returning now the hands have stopped. L25 · Bonds and Trust (Forces and Consequences)

Relationships deepen — trust forming, vulnerability shown, connection building, loyalty tested. The character is bonding with someone, not reading or negotiating with them. Solo play makes bonds difficult. In group play, relationships form through improvised dialogue — two people performing the connection at the table. Solo, the player has to perform both sides, and the temptation is to flatten the NPC into a function or make every relationship easy. L25 solves this by generating the emotional texture of the bond through the dice rather than through the player’s judgement. The results work through any lens — the PC’s experience of the connection, the NPC’s experience of the connection, or the developing bond between two NPCs the player is tracking.

I share / endure / confront [moment] with [person]. Plainly, [objective detail].
